10 Best Vacuums for Stairs

1

Oreck Commercial BB900DGR XL Pro 5

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

The Oreck Commercial BB900DGR XL Pro 5 is arguably the best budget vacuum for stairs that we encountered as it is extremely inexpensive. However, its low price does not seem to have otherwise impacted its cleaning ability as it provides a surprising 195 AW of suction which is one of the more powerful we reviewed.

A big part of the Oreck Commercial BB900DGR XL Pro 5’s power comes from its solid motor which might only push 4 amps but is also rated at 780 watts. That said, this vacuum for stairs does not generate the best airflow due to an odd design with the attachment connection, requiring you to be directly on top of any mess.

The Oreck Commercial BB900DGR XL Pro 5 is also one of the few models on our list that does not include any feature to make carrying it around easier. Though, that may not be much of an issue as it is also one of the lightest vacuums for stairs on our list, tipping the scales at only 5 lbs.

Pros

  • Has a powerful motor
  • Generates good suction
  • Has a hypo-allergenic filter
  • Is less expensive

Cons

  • Not the best airflow
  • Must be carried

2

BISSELL BigGreen Commercial BGCOMP9H

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

The BISSELL BigGreen Commercial BGCOMP9H definitely lives up to its name as easily the most powerful vacuum for stairs regardless of which metric you use. In terms of raw motor power, this is the only vacuum we reviewed which measures its power in hp at 1 ⅗ hp, but it also pushes 1200 watts-- the most on our list.

All of that motor power also translates to suction power with the BISSELL BigGreen Commercial BGCOMP9H being the only model able to vacuum liquids at 98 ⅖” water lift. To complement that liquid suction, this vacuum also boasts a solid dry mess suction power too with an airflow of 106 CFM.

As if that were not enough, you will not have to spend as much time cleaning with the BISSELL BigGreen Commercial BGCOMP9H thanks to an 8 qt tank and a 12” cleaning path. That said, this is one of the only vacuums we looked at with a single cleaning system and is also much heavier than the competition.

Pros

  • Has a powerful motor
  • Has excellent suction
  • Has a HEPA filter
  • Is surprisingly quiet

Cons

  • Is more expensive
  • No additional attachments

3

Hoover Commercial Backpack Vacuum C2401

Top Choice

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Hoover is known as a top-tier vacuum company, and the Hoover Commercial Backpack Vacuum C2401 does not disappoint with a unique backpack design that makes it easy to carry without putting pressure on your back. On top of that, this vacuum also sports a large carrying capacity with a tank that can hold up to 6 ⅖ qt.

Beyond its size and maneuverability, the Hoover Commercial Backpack Vacuum C2401 is also fairly powerful with a motor that can push 8 ½ A. This vacuum offers a somewhat unbalanced suction performance though as it can generate a solid airflow of 120 CFm but does not seem to perform as well on carpet.

That said, you do not have to worry about the volume of the Hoover Commercial Backpack Vacuum C2401 as you carry it since it only generates 60 dB of noise. Even better, this vacuum will keep your air just as clean as your floors with the inclusion of a Hypercone HEPA filter-- not to mention the large 11” cleaning path.

Pros

  • Is fairly powerful
  • Has a HEPA filter
  • Has a backpack
  • Is fairly quiet

Cons

  • Is more expensive
  • Not great with carpet

4

eufy by Anker HomeVac S11 Infinity

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

eufy is Anker’s home goods brand and the HomeVac S11 Infinity makes a solid showing for the single product line as a powerful cordless stick vacuum. It is worth noting that this vacuum does not boast the longest runtime we encountered at 40 min, though its recharge time of 3 ½ hr is on par with the competition.

Still, the more surprising aspect of this vacuum for stairs is its power, especially when you consider that the motor only pushes 350 watts. With that motor, the HomeVac S11 Infinity is more than capable of generating a solid 120 Aw and an impressive 20 kpa to suck up any mess regardless of the size or surface.

On the other hand, this vacuum may be able to suck up the mess, but it will struggle to contain all of it as it only comes with a ⅔ qt tank capacity. Thankfully, the HomeVac S11 Infinity offers a 5-point washable filter system and is exceptionally quiet, generating only between 60 to 68 dB depending on the selected setting.

Pros

  • Has excellent suction
  • Has a good filter
  • Is fairly quiet
  • Is less expensive

Cons

  • Not the largest capacity
  • Not the longest runtime

5

Dyson V7

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Dyson may have made its name a couple of decades ago, but it maintains its reputation with the V series, though the name itself seems to push the price of the Dyson V7 vacuum up a bit. Still, this vacuum for stairs performs reasonably well with a motor that pushes the 22-volt battery for plenty of power.

In terms of its raw suction, the Dyson V7 vacuum generates 100 AW which may not be the most we encountered but is generally solid all-around. Even better, this is one of the lightest vacuums for stairs on our list at only 5 ⅓ lbs, making it ideal for easy maneuverability on the narrow surfaces of stair faces.

That said, the Dyson V7 vacuum is a cordless model with many of the same flaws you tend to encounter, especially when it comes to the runtime which sits at a low 30 min. Still, you may not need to worry about that as much thanks to the 9 ⅘” cleaning path and a HEPA filter to keep your home’s air clean.

Pros

  • Has decent suction
  • Has a HEPA filter
  • Is exceptionally lightweight
  • Has a decent cleaning path

Cons

  • Is more expensive
  • Not the longest runtime

6

BISSELL ICONpet Cordless

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Bissell makes another appearance on our list, this time with the cordless BISSELL ICONpet Cordless that is one of the more powerful models we found. While its motor pushes the expected 22-volts that most other cordless vacuums do, it is able to get a whopping 27 kpa of suction power out of it.

It is also worth noting that the BISSELL ICONpet Cordless avoids the shorter runtime commonly found with cordless models and can run for 50 min before needing a recharge-- though it will take a bit longer to recharge when it does need one. This vacuum for stairs was also not able to avoid the smaller tank capacity common with cordless stick models at only ⅖ qt.

Still, the BISSELL ICONpet Cordless keeps your home clean in other ways like with the Smart Seal Allergen System filter that is also washable. As if that were not enough, this vacuum is also a bit on the inexpensive side, though it might be a trade in design as it is louder than most, generating between 70 to 74 dB.

Pros

  • Has excellent suction
  • Has a hypoallergenic filter
  • Has a good runtime
  • Is less expensive

Cons

  • Has a longer charge time
  • Is a louder vacuum

7

Eureka Flash NES510

Top Value

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Eureka’s only entry on our list is a good one as the Eureka Flash NES510 is an inexpensive option that does not skimp out on the cleaning power. Granted, this vacuum does a much better job of cleaning floors than it does keeping the air in your home clean, but the foam filter is at least washable.

That said, this is one of the few corded vacuums that we encountered with a smaller tank capacity, only able to hold ½ qt. However, the corded design plays well when it comes to power as the motor can push 5 amps and 500 watts, making it one of the more powerful stick vacuums that we reviewed.

All of the motor’s power translates to suction power as the Eureka Flash NES510 can generate an impressive 15 kpa. It also does not hurt that this vacuum only weighs 6 ⅓ lbs and boasts a wide 11” cleaning path for quick and easy cleaning-- even if it is less versatile than some with only a 3-point cleaning system.

Eureka easyclean is another popular model but Eureka flash is a better option according to our review.

Pros

  • Is fairly powerful
  • Has good suction
  • Has a wide cleaning path
  • Is less expensive

Cons

  • Has a smaller capacity
  • Not the best filter

8

Hoover ONEPWR Blade+ BH53310

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Hoover’s second entry on our list may not be quite as powerful as its first, but it makes up for that in other ways-- a low price tag being one of them. While the motor is nothing to write home about, the Hoover ONEPWR Blade+ BH53310 still pushes 3 amps and 20 volts to generate a solid 6 ½ kpa of suction power.

Unfortunately, when it comes to common cordless stick vacuum flaws, this model suffers from them all as it only runs for around 30 min before needing to be recharged. As if that were not bad enough, the Hoover ONEPWR Blade+ BH53310 has the smallest tank capacity on our list at only ⅓ qt.

On the other hand, this vacuum for stairs does a solid job cleaning, both your floors and the air thanks to the inclusion of a patented Dustvault filter system. Beyond that, the Hoover ONEPWR Blade+ BH53310 only produces 63 dB of noise, and its ONEPWR battery system transfers to other products in the lineup.

Pros

  • Has decent suction
  • Is fairly quiet
  • Has a good filter
  • Is less expensive

Cons

  • Has a smaller capacity
  • Not the longest runtime

9

Dyson V11 Torque

Top of Line

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Dyson appears once again on our list, but this time the company noted for its power offers one of the best Vacuum for carpeted stairs that we came across. It also works well with hardwood floors. The Dyson V11 Torque more than lives up to its flagship name with a motor that can push an incredible 30 ½ amps of power-- though it comes at the expense of volume, generating between 70 to 81 dB of noise.

Still, the Dyson V11 Torque’s powerful motor also translates to solid suction power with 7 ¾ kpa thanks to its cyclonic suction system. As if that were not enough, this vacuum for stairs is reasonably lightweight at 6 ⅔ lbs while also keeping the air in your home clean with a HEPA filter.

Also, one of the more impressive qualities of the Dyson V11 Torque is its 60 min runtime which is one of the longest for a cordless model we came across-- though it also takes the longest to recharge. Of course, nothing is free, and this vacuum is on the expensive side, but you get a versatile 6-point cleaning system for that cost.

Pros

  • Is extremely powerful
  • Has decent suction
  • Has a HEPA filter
  • Has a good runtime

Cons

  • Is more expensive
  • Has a longer charge time

10

Shark IONFlex 2X DuoClean IF251

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Shark may not be as experienced or prestigious as some of the competitors, but it more than makes up for that fact with raw cleaning ability. In terms of the motor, the Shark IONFlex 2X DuoClean IF251 boasts an 11.9-amp motor, though it only pushes 300 watts-- which is still good for its purposes.

Specifically, this vacuum for stairs can generate 11 ½ kpa which is one of the best suction power ratings for a stick vacuum. Even better, the Shark IONFlex 2X DuoClean IF251 avoids some of the other stick vacuum pitfalls with an 80 min runtime and a charge time of 3 ½ hrs-- fully within the market average.

Unfortunately, this vacuum cannot avoid all of the stick vacuum flaws as its tank holds the smallest capacity on our list at only ⅓ qt. Still, the Shark vacuum IONFlex 2X DuoClean IF251 is one of the few stick vacuums we found with a 5-point cleaning system, making it more versatile-- but that also increases its weight a bit to 8 ⅔ lbs.

Shark rocket is another popular model but it didnt make it to our top ten list.

Pros

  • Is extremely powerful
  • Is more versatile
  • Has good suction
  • Has a good runtime

Cons

  • Is more expensive
  • Has a smaller capacity

Buyer’s Guide

Type

Upright vacuum- This is the traditional type of vacuum cleaner where the primary cleaning system is built into the base that rolls on wheels. While this type of vacuum is not the most convenient for stairs, it often makes up for that fact with power and versatility.

Canister - Canister vacuums are somewhat similar to an upright in the motor and frame design, but the primary cleaning apparatus tends to be connected to a long hose. This type of vacuum is often more mobile and a bit easier to use for stairs, though it is notoriously bad for exceedingly tall staircases.

Stick vacuum cleaners - Stick vacuums are newer and tend to rely on cordless battery packs as opposed to cords while also being lightweight and easy to maneuver. While this tends to make stick vacuums a much easier vacuum for stairs and edges, they also often suffer from shorter run-times and smaller tank capacities.

Robot Vacuums - As attractive as they seem, they are not suitable for vacuuming stairs

Cordless or handheld vacuums - A cordless vacuum is very convenient, ergonomic and a lightweight vacuum option which well with stairs

Power

There are a couple of different ways to measure the power of a vacuum with some brands focusing on the power of the vacuum’s motor and others focusing on the powerful suction. While the two types of power are related, they cannot be used to gauge the other at a one for one comparison.

If you have to choose between the two, strong suction power tends to win out with air watts or AW and kilopascals or kpa being the most accurate ratings. As far as motor power goes, this can provide an idea of how effective the vacuum might be but also often tells you how well it will work over longer periods and regular use.

Cleaning System

Cleaning systems are rated in “points” with any stair vacuum providing at least a 1-point cleaning system, but many manufacturers increase their vacuum’s versatility by including additional points. All of the different attachments that come with a vacuum is another point, except extension wands.

It is worth noting that some vacuums even use multiple points with the primary cleaning apparatus, but that is the exception and not the norm. While some attachments are more useful than others, a crevice tool and a motorized brush tend to be not only the most common additional points but the most useful as well.

Capacity

The capacity of a vacumm for stairs and edges matters more depending on the size of your home with larger homes favoring larger capacities. Of course, a larger tank capacity tends to correspond with a larger vacuum, in general, which can present some issues for cleaning stairs, depending on the type and design of the vacuum.

It also does not help that different manufacturers use different units of measurement, often allowing them to advertise a deceptively larger number-- though we converted all capacities to quarts. If you have two separate vacuums for different cleaning purposes, you likely do not need to worry about a smaller tank for the stair vacuum.

Type of Filtration System

Foam - This is the most basic being a single layer of foam that keeps the largest particles from escaping. However, this type of filtration is does nothing to prevent microscopic particles from escaping and does not help those with allergies.

HEPA Filtration - This is the type of filter necessary to help keep dust allergies under check as it can filter up to 99% of particles as small as 3 microns in size. That said, HEPA filters are significantly more expensive than foam filters and lose their effectiveness rapidly.

Washable - Regardless of the type of filter you choose, it is always a good idea to get one that is washable as this property will significantly extend the filter’s lifespan and help reduce overhead costs. However, a washable filter will not last forever and will eventually need to be replaced, but it is a more cost-effective type.

Design

Cord vs Cordless - While this may seem like an easy choice, it comes with a caveat. A cordless vacuum will obviously be easier to maneuver and require less thought with stairs, but cordless vacuums run on battery packs. No matter what kind of suction power it can generate, a cordless vacuum tends to lag behind the corded models in terms of power as they cannot keep a consistent level of power for as long.

Bag vs Bagless - This is another consideration that seems obvious, and with all things being equal, it is. However, most vacuums with a bag have a large enough capacity that replacing the bag might be worth the trouble. While bagless vacuums are easily cheaper in the long run, you will usually have to empty them far more frequently.

Hose Length - Depending on the type of vacuum you choose, this is either an important factor or fairly irrelevant for stairs. If you use an upright or canister vacuum, it is a good idea to get a hose that will reach to at least the midpoint of your staircase, so you can vacuum half of the stairs with the chassis positioned at the landings.

Portable vacuum - Since vacuuming on stairs is harder than flat floors, portability of the unit is an important factor to consider.

Accessories

Having the right accessories with a vacuum cleaner is key for a good cleaning experience. The right power cord length, crevice tools, attachments for upholstery , dust cup, brush roll , bristles, brush attachment, dusting brush, washable filter and battery life are all necessary for smooth operations.
